Adrienne Jones (D-10th). Cosponsors: Susan Lee (D-16th), Richard S. Madaleno
(D-18th), Maggie L. McIntosh (D-23rd), Pauline H. Menes (D-21st), Shirley
Nathan-Pulliam (D-10th), Samuel I. Rosenberg (D-41st), and Frank S. Turner
(D-13th). Purpose: Expands prohibitions and protected classes of people to
include specified disabilities, sexual orientation, ancestry, and gender;
etc. Last Action: Hearing before House Judiciary Committee - Feb. 5, 2003.
Next Action: Scheduled hearing, Feb. 19th, 1:00 PM.

HB 345 - Education - Prevention of Harassment and Intimidation in Public
Schools. FSJ Position: SUPPORT. Sponsor: Del. Luiz R.S. Simmons (D-17th).
Purpose: prohibiting students from harassing or intimidating another student
based on race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual
orientation, mental, physical or sensory disability, or any other
distinguishing characteristic; requiring specified individuals to report
incidents under specified circumstances; authorizing a county board of
education to establish a harassment and intimidation prevention program for
specified individuals; requiring a county board of education to incorporate
specified policies in its training program; etc. Last Action: First Reading.
Assigned to House Ways and Means Committee, Feb. 3, 2003. Next Action:
Hearing to be scheduled.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Come out and testify! If you or a loved one have ever been the victim of
a hate crime because of your gender identity, sexual orientation, disability,
or ancestry, please join us in Annapolis and tell your story on Wednesday,
Feb. 19th at 1:00 PM. The General Assembly only meets for 90 days each year.
Time is short and actions will happen fast. If you want to support the effort
to expand hate crimes prohibitions to include our communities, now is the
time! Call or e-mail the Field Director to get on the schedule and receive
assistance with drafting your testimony and direct support on the day of the
hearing. (Contact information below.)

2. Care about creating a safe and supportive learning environment for LGBTQ
youth in public schools? Get ready to testify in support of HB 345. Call the
Field Director for date, time, and all the assistance you need to succeed!

3. Come out and support at the hearings! We need to fill the audience with
supporters to demonstrate the need for legislation promoting LGBT civil
rights. It's just a few hours out of your routine and it makes a tremendous
difference in achieving victory. Call the Field Director.
